Solution 2

 Common Management Agent
Solution 1 - Obtain FrameworkManifest.xml from another computer:

  1. Locate another VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) computer where the updates are working without error.

  2. Copy the FrameworkManifest.xml from the following path:
For VSE 8.5i  (running on Windows Vista)
    x:\Program Data\McAfee\Common Framework

For VSE 8.5i (running on Windows XP and earlier)
    x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee\Common Framework
For VSE 8.0i (running on Windows XP and earlier)
    x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates\Common Framework

  3. Paste the file to portable media or a network share that can be accessed by both computers.

  4. Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.

  5. Right-click McAfee Framework Service and select Stop.

  6. Copy FrameworkManifest.xml to the Common Framework directory.

  7. Right-click McAfee Framework Service and select Start.

  8. Update the product.
Solution  2 - Delete FrameworkManifest.xml and reinstall the Common Management Agent (CMA):
It is necessary to delete FrameworkManifest.xml because it may not be removed or replaced when an uninstall/re-install is undertaken.
Step 1 - Allow VSE files and settings to be modified (VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i and higher only)

  1. Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console.

  2. Right-click Access Protection, then select Properties.

  3. Select Common Standard Protection.

  4. Select Prevent modification of McAfee files and settings and disable this option.

  5. Click OK.
Step 2 - Delete FrameworkManifest.xml and reinstall CMA

  1. Delete FrameworkManifest.xml from the following path:

For VSE 8.5i (running on Windows Vista)
    x:\Program Data\McAfee\Common Framework

For VSE 8.5i (running on Windows XP and earlier)
    x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee\Common Framework
For VSE 8.0i (running on Windows XP and earlier)
    x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates\Common Framework

  2. Restart your computer.

  3. Re-install the Common Management Agent (CMA) / ePO agent.

Ubuntu giving problem when installed in Thumb Drive

Hi friends, I had faces a strange situation couple of days before, i am having XP operating system in my Laptop and I tried to install Ubuntu in my thumb drive, after being done with the task i found a strange problem. My PC needs thumb drive plugged in every time when i want to boot it. That was quite irritating, and if suppose any problem comes then your pc will not get booted and at last you need to upgrade your OS and that's the think i don't like to do.

I searched a lot in the web and found a simple solution of it. The Thing that had happened was quite obvious, as i installed Ubuntu after my Xp, Ubuntu now had moved MBR (Memory Boot Record) to the thumb drive and that was creating all the problem. at the booting process laptop was always searching the MBR in thumb drive and when i kept thumb drive unplugged it was showing error. the thing i had to do was to set the MBR of Windows XP.

This can be done very easily, you just need to boot your pc with Windows Xp CD and after going into recovery console type the following command:

fixmbr

this will surely help you out with your problem.

What is a Trojan horse program?

A type of program that is often confused with viruses is a 'Trojan horse'
program. This is not a virus, but simply a program (often harmful) that
pretends to be something else.

McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.7i

McAfee is pleased to announce the Release Candidate (RC) for VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i and AntiSpyware Enterprise Module 8.7.
This release of VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i contains defect fixes, incorporates the Beta 2 release of the 5300 scanning engine, and a number of features that improve performance of malware scanning and incorporates functional and usability improvements. Providing this new functionality required making architectural changes to the product infrastructure. While we have performed extensive testing to ensure that these changes don’t impact the overall stability of the product, we urge you to download this beta version, test all features in environments that are similar to your production environments, and provide us feedback to help us further improve the stability and quality of the release.
Enhance your security with real-time malware protection now available with VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i!
A new feature, "Heuristic network check for suspicious files," provides customers with real-time detections for malware.
·         This feature uses sensitivity levels that can be configured based on your risk tolerance, to look for suspicious files on your endpoints that are running VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i.
·         When enabled, this feature detects a suspicious program and sends a DNS request containing a fingerprint of the suspicious file to McAfee Avert Labs which then communicates the appropriate action back to VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i.
·          The real-time defense feature also provides protection for classes of malware for which signatures might not be available.
·         This protection is in addition to the world-class DAT-based detection VirusScan Enterprise has always provided.  The user experience remains the same and no additional client software is required.
·         In this release, this optional feature is available only for on-demand scans and email scanning and is disabled by default. You must select a sensitivity level to enable the feature. We encourage you to try out this feature and provide us valuable feedback so that we can continue to enhance our industry leading malware protection capabilities. See the New Features tab and the Product Guide for more details.
Please see New Product Features below and the product release notes for additional details of product changes.

Digital Virus

More than nine million computers around the world have been infected by a digital virus in what experts believe is a multi-staged attack.

The world leading security experts paint a scary scenario, stressing that they are yet to identify who programmed it and what the next stage will be.

Known as Conficker or Downadup, it is spread by a recently discovered Microsoft Windows vulnerability, by guessing network passwords and by hand-carried consumer gadgets like USB keys, the New York Times said on Friday.

Experts were quoted as saying that it is the worst infection since the Slammer worm exploded through the Internet in January 2003, and it may have infected as many as nine million personal and business computers around the world.

Worms like Conficker not only ricochet around the Internet at lightning speed, they harness infected computers into unified systems called botnets, which can then accept programming instructions from their clandestine masters.

The experts were quoted as saying that many computer users may not notice that their machines have been infected.

But they might be waiting for the instructions to materialise, to determine what impact the botnet will have on PC users.

Norman Malware Cleaner 2008.12.03

Norman Malware Cleaner is a Norman program utility that may be used to detect and remove specific malicious software (malware).

Note that it should not be used as a substitute for running normal proactive antivirus protection, but rather as a reactive tool to handle systems that are already infected.

It will clean an infected system completely:

  • kill running processes that are infected
  • reveal and remove rootkits
  • remove infections from disk (including ActiveX components and browser helper objects)
  • restore correct registry values
  • remove references created by malware in hosts file
  • remove windows firewall rules for malicious programs

McAfee AVERT Stinger 10.0.1.602

McAfee AVERT Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Worm or Virus...What's the Difference?

Everyone has been infected with a virus at one time or another either through the common cold or the flu. A virus attacks the human body by entering through one of the many openings and attaching itself to a host cell. It releases a piece of genetic information into the cell and recruits the cell’s enzymes to propagate the genetic information. Once the genetic code has been adequately replicated, it destroys the cell and attacks cells nearby.

How does a computer virus simulate a biological virus? Just as a biological virus injects its own genetic information into a cell and interferes with the body’s normal operations, a computer virus is a program written to interfere with the proper functioning of a computer. It may damage programs, delete files, reformat hard disks and perform other forms of destructive acts.

To be classified as a virus, a program must meet two criteria. It must be able to execute itself by placing its own code in the execution path of another program. The program must also be able to replicate itself by replacing existing computer files with copies of the virus-infected files. Similar to the way a biological virus requires a host cell, a computer virus requires an infected host file to propagate itself.

Viruses have become the villains of the computer world, propagating themselves and destroying everything in their path. However, another tool of destruction, known as the worm, has been creeping into the computer industry. Most of us have heard of the dreaded Blaster worm that attacks Microsoft websites, but what exactly is a worm and how does it differ from a virus? Actually, a worm is a type of virus that attacks the computer in a method differing from the way a typical virus attacks a computer. Unlike the typical virus, the worm does not require a host program to propagate. A worm enters a computer through a weakness in the computer system and propagates itself using network flaws.

The typical virus requires activation through user intervention, such as double clicking or sending outgoing email. However, a worm releases a document containing the “worm” macro and sends copies of itself to other computers through network flaws, therefore bypassing any need for user intervention.

So, what can you do to protect your computer from virus infection? There are a number of preventative measures that you can take. For example, you can purchase and continually update virus scan software. Make sure that this software contains the “real-time” scanning feature which monitors all incoming and outgoing mail. You may also install a firewall which prohibits unauthorized access to your computer. By installing these preventative devices, you can proactively defend against viruses.
